Officials weren’t sure Wednesday when 5th Street in Midtown would reopen after a sinkhole prompted its closure.
“No timetable for reopening,” Georgia Tech police said in a Twitter post shortly after 4 p.m.

Officials closed 5th Street between West Peachtree and Cypress streets shortly after noon. It’s not clear what caused the sinkhole.
Delays were expected, and drivers were encouraged to seek alternate routes.
The sinkhole continues a string of recent traffic-related incidents in metro Atlanta.
There was the I-85 bridge fire and collapse March 30, which left a stretch of the freeway impassable.
On Monday, a tractor-trailer filled with chemicals overturned before dawn on the Downtown Connector, a highway that police said the truck shouldn’t have been on in the first place.
Then before noon Monday, a portion of I-20 in DeKalb County buckled, blocking westbound traffic. The freeway reopened Tuesday.

Also, the sinkhole closure is near the historic Biltmore on West Peachtree Street. Georgia Tech plans to incorporate the facility into Tech Square, and the 1920s-era Biltmore will retain its historic status, as reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
